Mozambique: Brazilian pharmaceutical company plans to build factory in short term

Brazilian Pharmaceutical company Pharlab plans to set up a medication factory in Mozambique in the short term, the company’s chairman, António Carlos Vargas said Thursday in Maputo.

The project, which is to be built in Maputo, with services extended to the whole of Mozambique, will produce several generic drugs, including antibiotics, intravenous and oral serums, as well as other medication.

Speaking to Mozambican newspaper, Notícias, Vargas, who did not mention the investment to be made, said that all necessary technology and human capacity would be transferred to Mozambique so that the drugs produced in the country could be of the same standard of quality and international acceptability, as those produced in Brazil.

He also said that after contacts with several Mozambican entities, including the Government, via the Health Ministry and the Center for Investment Promotion (CPI), his company felt encouraged to continue working towards implementing its project in the short term.According to Vargas, after the project goes into operation its products will be sold locally and in the regional market.

The chairman of Pharlab also said that, although the company did not produce retroviral drugs, it can sell them under the terms of a partnership signed with a Brazilian state laboratory that manufactures the drugs.Pharlab has been present in Angola for two and half years, where it built two factories; in Luanda and Benguela.
